Golf carts can get dirty very quickly.
If you play sandy or muddy courses, your golf cart floor will get really dirty.
Sometimes a quick spray off will do the trick, but most of the time, you need a deeper clean than this.
We have put together a guide to help you clean your golf cart floors and make sure they are in top condition.
Of course, if you have a specialty type cart with a unique floor, you will want to proceed with caution and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
How to Clean Golf Cart Floors (Step-by-Step Guide)
Golf cart floors are not going to be all that difficult to clean, but they will be very dirty.
Make sure to complete this process when you are in your driveway or an area where you can hose off the dirt afterward.
We don’t recommend cleaning your golf cart floor while the cart is in the garage.
1. Gather Supplies
You need to prepare a few things to get ready to clean your golf cart.
It is best to have the following supplies at your disposal.
- Hose with decent water pressure
- Scrub brush
- Bucket
- Dishwashing soap
- Towel
As far as the scrub brush is concerned, you will probably need something slightly rougher than you would use on a car finish.
You do want to avoid a metal scrub brush, though, as it could cause potential damage.

Look for a scrub brush somewhere in between which allows you the ability to scrub and remove dirt without damaging the golf cart in any way.
As far as dishwashing soap is concerned, you can use any brand or make, it does not matter.
A mild soap like this should be all that you need to get the golf cart looking clean again.
2. Remove Anything from Front of Golf Cart
The next step will be to remove anything from the dashboard or storage containers of the front of your cart.
This area is likely going to get wet when you are spraying the cart down, and you don’t want to risk any damage.
Take everything out of your cart and put it in a bucket or off to the side until you are finished cleaning the floor of your golf cart.
3. Take Mats Out
Many golf carts have a mat going across the floorboards.
If you have a mat on your golf cart, we are going to go through the process of cleaning the mat as well.
There is no sense in cleaning the floor if you do not also clean the mat.
Take the mat out and put it off to the side, as we will get to that in a later step.
4. Spray Cart
Once the golf cart is emptied in the front and the mats are out, take your hose and spray out the floor.
Put your hose on the jet setting so that you have a decent amount of water pressure spraying at the floor of the golf cart.
At private golf clubs where they clean hundreds of carts in a day, they often use a power washer to clean golf cart floors.
You will not have to worry about damaging the floor of your golf cart with the power and the strength of your hose spray.
You should try and squirt the hose on any clumps of dirt or trouble spots you notice.
Keep directing the dirty water to flow off the golf cart, and do not allow it to collect in the center of the cart.
When you feel like you have given the cart a good spray off, you can move to step number five.
5. Scrub and Clean
At this point, you are going to need to fill the bucket you gathered with your supply list.
Fill the bucket with soap and water.
Use the scrub brush to scrub the floor of the golf cart.
Try to use a circular motion with the scrub brush to loosen any dirt which is difficult to remove.
This should help to make it easier when you spray the cart down again.
Once you have the entire base of the cart scrubbed and covered with soap and water, you can rinse again with the hose.
Make sure you are getting all of the cart clean when you rinse as it is not a great idea to let the soap sit on the cart and dry.
6. Allow to Dry
At this point, we recommend allowing the cart to dry to inspect for further dirt and stains.
Sometimes if the cart is wet, it will look clean, and then as it dries, you may see there are additional things to take care of.
Feel free to repeat this process as many times as you need to in order to get the golf cart floor clean again.
7. Clean Mats
When it comes to mats, you are going to have to make sure you clean both sides of the mat.
The golf cart mats usually have holes in them which allow sand and dirt to fall through.
This is great during your round of golf, but at some point, it needs to be cleaned out.
Spray your mats down, flip them over and spray them off again.
Once you have completed that, you can take the scrub brush with the soapy water and start scrubbing the mats down.
This should be all that is necessary to get any dirt off the mats.
When you have finished scrubbing the mats, you can spray them off with the hose again and then allow them to dry.
8. Replace Mats
When everything is completely dry, you can start putting your golf cart back together.
Take the mats you have cleaned and place them back in the cart.
You can also replace anything that belongs in the dashboard of the cart as well.
At this point, your golf cart floor deep clean is complete.
We recommend spraying the floor of your golf cart down quite often.
This will keep things cleaner in between your deep clean sessions and make it easier overall to maintain your golf cart.
Can You Pressure Wash a Golf Cart?
Many golf cart owners wonder if using a pressure washer would be an easier way to keep their golf cart clean.
A pressure washer sure does a great job of spraying off dirt, but the power it produces can sometimes be too much for the golf cart.
There are parts of your golf cart we would not recommend spraying with a pressure washer, particularly the seats of the cart.
However, spraying the floor of the cart should not be an issue.
Do not hold the pressure washer in one location for an extended period, and you really don’t need to use it at full power either.
If you are responsible about how you use the pressure washer, there should be no major issues with using it.
If your golf cart has any electronic systems, make sure you are not squirting them with the hose or the pressure washer.
They may or may not be made to get that wet.
How Do I Get Golf Cart Floor to Shine?
Some people want to get their golf cart floors to look like they did when the cart came out of the factory.
Between wear and tear from golfing and the weather bleaching out the black floor, chances are your cart floors don’t look like they once did.
You can use a black tire shine to try and pull the color out of the cart floors again, but there is a downside to this.
The cart floors will get very slippery.
This product is meant to stay on a tire even in poor weather conditions, so it is really hard to get off of the floorboard.
Some golfers feel as though their foot can slide right across it, and it could be a real safety hazard.
We can almost guarantee you that people will pay closer attention to your golf swing than the floor of your golf cart.
Don’t let the slightly bleached out golf cart floors cause you too much of a headache.
If you don’t have mats on your cart floor, one way to cover up an older looking floor is to purchase nice new mats.
Some of the mats are thicker and raised, but there are also flatter ones which will look almost like the original floor on the cart.
Regardless of the method you choose, regularly washing and taking care of your golf cart is going to keep the floors in excellent condition.
How Often Should I Wash My Golf Cart?
Washing your golf cart is a bit like washing your regular vehicle or vacuuming your house.
If you are away on vacation, you probably don’t need the floor vacuumed.
If your car has been parked in the garage all week, you probably don’t need to head to the car wash.
You can handle your golf cart washing the same way.
If you play golf a few times a week, you are going to want to wash your golf cart at the end of the week.
You will keep the cart in better condition, and you will also be happy when you go to play golf the next time, and you aren’t instantly covered in sand and dirt.
Spraying the golf cart off with a hose after a round is undoubtedly enough to count as a wash.
Ensure you take your golf clubs off the cart at least once a month and do a complete clean.
At this time, it’s not a bad idea to clean your golf clubs as well.
In fact, while you are at it, you may as well check the batteries on your electric cart and the tires.
Plan a morning once a month when you will take care of your golf gear and your cart, and all of it will last you much longer.
What If My Golf Cart Mat Is a Rug?
Most golf cart mats are rubber.
They are built this way so that they are easy to clean, and you can spray them off and call it a day.
However, some golf cart owners have more of a rug on the floor of their golf cart.
If this describes you, then we don’t recommend spraying this rug with a hose.
You will very likely get the rug too wet, and when it dries, it could carry some odor with it.
Instead, you should remove the rug and vacuum it.
This is almost exactly what you would do with a car mat or rug.
We also recommend shaking these rugs out after a round of golf because there is no question that your golf shoes have tracked dirt and sand into the cart.
Do Golf Shoes Ruin a Golf Cart Floor?
When you purchase a brand-new golf cart, you will be very conscious about how you use the cart.
The first day you take it out to play, you may worry about any kind of damage that can be done because of your golf shoes.
The good news is that the soft spikes on golf shoes and the new spikeless golf shoes are making it, so you don’t need to worry about damage to your cart.
We do have a helpful trick for keeping the floor of your cart just a little cleaner during a round.
When you walk out of the bunker, take your wedge, and tap it on the bottom of your shoe.
When you do this, a lot of the sand will release, and you won’t track it all back into the cart.
Although this won’t entirely prevent you from having to clean out your golf cart, it will certainly help the process.
Hopefully, these tips on how to clean the floor of your golf cart have helped you solve any problems you were having with the cart.
